"It takes a lot of courage to release the familiar and seemingly secure, to embrace the new.  But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful.  There is more security in the adventurous and exciting, for in movement there is life, and in change there is power.~~Alan Cohen

Discover your Emotional Wisdom

If you fail to encourage change and growth in your life, the perception you give is that you prefer to live in risk-free situations.  But to do so, to remain risk-free, means that life will become stagnant - we all need to keep growing to make our lives meaningful and to stimulate our bodies and minds with the will to live.

12 Steps to Recovering your Emotional Wisdom

"It does not matter what other people say or do.  What matters is how I choose to react and what I choose to believe about myself."

Last month we talked about eliminating any emotional stressors that stir up negative emotions.  This month we will focus on emotional prevention.

Negativity is rampant, but how we choose to react to negative situations is what empowers us to take charge of our emotional lives.  In order to become emotionally empowered, it is important to take preventative measures - it is important to avoid the negativity in the first place!  There are many tools you can incorporate into your daily life to help yourself avoid toxic emotional eruptions.  By preventing negative emotional reactions, you will gain a new perspective because the potentially upsetting situation will become just a small piece of your life, will require less attention, and it will become easier for you to respond in a more productive way.

Step 3: Recovering Emotional Prevention

Here are some proactive tools for preventing extreme emotional reactions by creating a balanced relationship with your feelings:

     1. For an uncluttered mind, create an uncluttered environment.  Bring balance and harmony to your space
by making a point of periodically getting rid of things you don't use.  This may help eliminate feelings of
         confusion, frustration or anxiety.

     2. Set healthy boundaries.  Don't overbook activities, or over-schedule yourself.  Learn how to say "no".
Learn to spend more of your life doing what you actually want to do, and less of what you think others
         want for you.

     3. Make looking at the positive side a regular habit.  Try putting a positive spin on life, when feelings of
frustration or anxiety poke through.  In time, you'll be less likely to engage in a toxic emotional response.

     4. Cultivate a spirit of gratitude.  Being grateful for all that you have is a great habit.  This is a very easy,
fun, and effective tool for decreasing stressful emotional responses.

To begin Step 3, acknowledge the negative stressors in your life so you can find ways to avoid them, so that you can prevent negative emotional outbursts.

Step 3:  To begin recovering emotional prevention, I will:

Suggestions to Help You Recover Emotional Wisdom

Now that you understand how to reduce emotional stress in your life, remember the following important points:

     • Try viewing your emotions as investments.  Expressing love, joy, and peacefulness will virtually guarantee
a return when you cultivate healthy emotional patterns.
     • Being aware of our perceptions is an important aspect of emotional prevention.  When we manage our
emotions in a healthy way, we know that our feelings about a situation are based on our perceptions.  This
enables us to get some emotional distance before jumping to conclusions.
     • Acknowledge your true feelings.  Stay in touch with how you feel about various aspects of your life.
Perhaps you can record these feelings in your morning pages.
     • Emotions are wonderful when we are in touch with them.  Healthy emotional expression is one of life's
       greatest gifts.
