Welcome to December!

Discover the Creativity Within

"The barrier beach makes us feel safe, protected, but the sea accepts no barriers.  The shore gives, withdraws, shifts.  Only the barrier beach stands straight and long against the sea.  It doesn't fit, it is hard and straight.  Life is relentless like the sea, its waves beating a constant path.  Let go, soften, shift, blend, be a part of life.  Feel the pulse, live it.  The barrier is a barrier to life.  Resistance is a barrier; hard when you hold it in your hand.  Growing it does not protect you, it hides your beauty.  Remove the barrier, let life be exposed.  Grow, love, weather the forces of nature."

12 Steps to Recovering your Creative Self

This month we are focusing on recovering a sense of faith.  Faith that we can do it.  Faith that we can accomplish that which we set our minds to.  But we naturally build up walls and barriers to maintain control of ourselves, because in our journey to creative freedom, we often fail to relinquish control.  That resistance, that barrier to our creativity is a last-minute sabotage, a form of self-destruction.  Creativity requires a profound trust in ourselves and those around us.  All of us have a dream that we can unfold if we simply relinquish control and have faith in ourselves so one day we can realize that dream.  By trusting ourselves, we learn to trust.

We must realize that the creative process is a process of surrender, not control.  We must have faith that we will succeed.

Step 12:  Recovering a Sense of Faith

As we work with our morning pages and artist dates, many forgotten samplings of our own creativity may come to mind.

     • I had forgotten about all those paintings I did in high school.
     • I forgot all about the skits I wrote when I was just 10 years old.
     • I used to tap dance!

We are intended to create.  And as we write, and dig ourselves out of denial, our memories, dreams and creative plans all move to the surface.  We discover anew that we are creative beings.  We want to do something but we think it needs to be the right something, by which we mean something important.  Life is meant to be an artist date.  That's why we were created.

But who will you trust, other than yourself, to support your creative action?  As you move forward to realize those dreams you have always resisted, as you move forward towards breaking down the barriers that have blocked your creative freedom, who can you trust to be happy for you?

     • Make a list: those friends who will support you.
     • Make another list:  those friends who will not support you.
     • Name your W.B.'s for what they are - Wet Blankets. Wrap yourself in something else - dry ones.
     • Surround yourself with those people whom you can trust, not those who stand in your way,
provide excuses or barriers as to why you cannot achieve your goals.
     • Set your sights, aim high, have faith in yourself and go for it!

To begin Step 12, acknowledge the barriers in your creative life and have faith that you can knock them down.

Step 12:  To begin recovering a sense of faith, I will:

Suggestions to Help You Recover Your Inner Creativity

Remember, for your creative recovery to continue, you require a commitment to further creative plans.  Consider signing a Creativity Contract.

The Creativity Contract

I am a recovering creative person.  To further my growth and my joy, I now commit myself to the following self-nurturing plans.

Morning pages have been an important part of my self-nurturing and self-discovery.  I hereby commit myself to continuing to work with them.

Artist's dates have been integral to my growth in self-love and my deepening joy in living.  I am willing to commit to weekly artist's dates for self-care.

I have discovered that I have a number of creative interests.  While I hope to develop many of them, my specific commitment is to allow myself to more fully explore my creativity within.

I have made the above commitments and will begin my new commitment on_________________________________.

Creative Activities for December

Write down any resistance, angers, and fears you have about going on from here.  We all have them.

     • Select a jar.  It could be a jar, a vase, a container.  Something to put your fears, your resentments, your
hopes, your dreams, your worries, into.
     • Use your jar. When you are worried or afraid, write down your fear, your barrier, and place that paper
       in the jar.
     • List five people you can talk to about your dreams and with whom you feel supported to dream and then
     • Take the next action.

A Little Inspiration

Offer no resistance.  Let life pound you with its waves until your barriers are worn away.  Flow with its tides and become one with the ocean.
