Monthly Newsletter for October 2011

"People spend a lifetime searching for happiness; looking for peace.  They chase idle dreams, addictions, even other people, hoping to fill the emptiness that plagues them.  The irony is the only place they ever needed to search was within.."~~Ramona L. Anderson

This month's edition discusses:

  • Discover the Creativity Within
  • Step 10 of the 12 Step Program to Recovering Your Creative Self
  • Creative in the Kitchen

  • Upcoming Events

Welcome to October!

Discover the Creativity Within

When someone is addicted to drugs, alcohol, food, money, sex, what is it that person is searching for?  What do we feel is missing from our lives that we need to fill the void with addictions?  Why do we become self-destructive instead of following the path of what we truly desire? Self-esteem, love and worth are not found in a bottle, in drugs, in making more money.  Addiction does not heal your life, and it separates you from the people you need to be close to.

12 Steps to Recovering your Creative Self

This month we want you to explore your sense of self-protection.  What is blocking your creative flow?  When we are clear about who we are and what we want, creative energy is allowed to flow freely within us.  But when we resist that creative energy, and refuse to go down the path we are destined for, we tend to put on the brakes and shut down.  We shut down the creative flow and demand that we regain our self-control.  We are protecting ourselves from what?  Failure?  Addiction?  Mistake?  Pure joy?

Step 10:  Recovering a Sense of Self-Protection
Some people use alcohol as their block.  For others it is work.  And for others it can be drugs or obsessing with painful love.  Acknowledging which of these you abuse when you want to block yourself is crucial to opening yourself up to true creative flow.

It takes grace and courage to admit and surrender our blocking devices.  Over time, we will ride out the anxiety and see where we emerge.  Anxiety is fuel.  We can use it to write with, paint with, work with.

                                                         Feel:  anxious!
                                                 Try:  using the anxiety!
Feel:  I just did it!  I didn't block!  I used the anxiety and moved ahead!
Oh my gosh, I am excited!

Exercise 1: The Deadlies

1. Take a piece of paper and cut seven small strips from it.  On each strip write one of the following words: alcohol, drugs, sex, work, money, food, family/friends.  Fold these strips of paper and place them in an envelope.  These folded strips are called deadlies.

2. Now draw one of the deadlies from the envelope and write five ways in which it has had a negative impact on your life.

3. Do this seven times, each time putting back the previous slip of paper so that you are always drawing from the same slips of paper.  You may draw the same deadly repeatedly.

4. Eventually you will experience a break-through, a break through denial and into clarity. Now ask yourself:  what baby steps can I take to actually achieve these possibilities?

"How often - even before we began - have we declared a task impossible?  And how often have we construed a picture of ourselves as being inadequate?  A great deal depends upon the thought patterns we choose and on the persistence with which we affirm them."~~ Piero Ferrucci

To begin Step 10, uncover the addictions or blocks that prevent you from having moving forward along your destined path.

Step 10:  To begin recovering a sense of self-protection, I will:

Suggestions to Help You Recover Your Inner Creativity

What will it take to eradicate the blocks that hinder your creativity?

The Awful Truth

Answer the following questions:

     1. Tell the truth:  What habit do you have that gets in the way of your creativity?
     2. Tell the truth:  What do you think might be a problem?
     3. Tell the truth:  What do you plan to do about this problem?
     4. Tell the truth:  What is your payoff in holding on to this block?

Creative Activities for October

The days are getting shorter and the nights are getting longer.  This month, don't forget to take some time for yourself!

     • List five small victories.
     • List three nurturing actions you took for yourself.
     • List three actions you could take to comfort yourself.
     • Make three nice promises to yourself and keep them.
     • Do one lovely thing for yourself each day this week.

A Little Inspiration

Whether you like yourself or not, love, love, love. Seek to get high on loving yourself and others.  The only known side effect is that love is blind to the faults of others, but that's not bad when you consider what other addicts are going through.
