Welcome to May!

Discover the Warmth Within

"It was one of those beautiful, lengthening days, when May was pressing back with both hands the shades of the morning and the evening." ~~Amelia E. Barr (1886)

Earth's cramped with Heaven this month...the days are lengthening and simple splendours are increasing.  Are you looking for love in all the right places?  Maybe hone your homing instincts and redefine sacred space.

There should be comfortable places from the living room to the bedroom that invite you to sit, sleep, relax and reflect.  There should be sources of beauty throughout that inspire; order that restores and the quiet grace of simplicity that soothes.

Create a comfortable home that protects, nurtures, and sustains all who seek refuge within its walls.

The 12 Step Program to Stress Less

Now that you have evaluated how you exercise, continue to nurture yourself to wellness with Step 5 of my 12 Step Program.

Adequate, uninterrupted sleep each night is essential for cell repair.  If you eat large meals to close to bedtime or drink the wrong liquids throughout the day, you over-stimulate your body.  This makes uninterrupted, restful, repairing sleep difficult.

To begin Step 5, gradually decrease stimulating liquids and consume them earlier in the day.  Eat smaller evening meals or eat earlier.

Step 5:  To begin changing how I rest, I will:

Suggestions to Help You Reduce Stress

Enjoy a Homecoming Footbath

While some day spas and mail order catalogues have foot tubs, a plastic dishpan large enough to let you stretch out your feet and deep enough to cover them with water above your ankle, is sufficient.

First lay down a big towel to go underneath the basin.  Fill the basin with a few inches of very warm water (not boiling) and add two tablespoons of Epsom salts, and a squirt of bubble bath or bath oil.  Before you soak your feet, give each of them a mini-massage, pressing the soles and pads of your feet and then gently pulling the kinks out of each toe.

Now soak your tired, aching feet for fifteen minutes.  Relax.  Sip a glass of wine, read, knit, listen to music or just close your eyes and do nothing.

If you're not watching the clock, you can take your feet out when the water cools down, or when your feet start to wrinkle.  Dry off each foot and then massage them with body lotion.  Put on a clean pair of socks, so that you don't slip or stain the carpet as you toddle down the hall to the rest of your pleasant evening.

May Activities

Many women I know share a seldom-expressed yearning to be comforted.  To be mothered.  Though we are grown, we never outgrow the need for someone special to hold us close, stroke our hair, tuck us into bed, and reassure us that tomorrow all will be well.  Today, as you walk through your own home, think about ways that you can start to mother yourself - everyday, not just once a year, in small but tangible ways.

     • Take the time to be grateful, thankful and happy.
     • Honour the mother within.
     • Realize that you are living up to your own expectations.
     • Take a walk through neighbourhood garage sales or flea markets.
     • Nurture yourself and your home with Feng Shui inspiration by removing clutter.
     • Give flowers to a friend, a neighbour, or perhaps a woman living in a nursing home.
