Discover the Creativity Within

Cold, gray, wet mornings make the shortest month seem like the longest.  If the weather has you stuck inside, turn cabin fever into a creative afternoon or evening.  Light a fire.  Indulge in a foreign film.  Reconsider red - on your toe nails and finger nails.  Give your favourite room a fresh coat of paint.  Cold, gray February days beg for creativity - what will your inner creativity accomplish this month?

"Pleasures newly found are sweet when they lie about our feet:  February...Praise of which I nothing know."~~William Wordsworth

The 12 Steps to Recovering your Creative Self

This month we will address self-definition as a major component of creative recovery.  You may find yourself pushing the proverbial envelope as your personal needs, desires and interests present themselves.

We encourage you to engage in an exercise called The "Wheel of Life".  The purpose of this exercise is to help you evaluate your life and your priorities.

Draw a large circle and divide it into seven pieces of pie.  Each piece will have a label.  They are:  spirituality, exercise, play, work, friends, home environment and romance/adventure.  Your circle should look like this:

Imagine that the center point of each piece of pie is the least desirable state and the outside of the circle for each piece of pie is the most desirable state.  Look at each category and think about where you are right now.  Where is that in relation to where you want to be?  Place a dot in each of the pieces of pie to reflect where you think you are right now.  Then connect the dots.

Do you have a balanced wheel or does it look like a starburst?  Keep in mind that it can be very difficult to make your way through life successfully or with meaning, if your wheel of life is unbalanced.

Any categories with dots close to the center of the circle are areas that need improving.  The goal is to bring more balance to your wheel by enhancing all categories so they move toward the outside of the wheel - the most desirable state.

Make a list of activities related to each category that you can actively engage in to improve that area of life.  Schedule time on your calendar to spend time on these activities and at the end of the month, create another Wheel of Life to see if you have a more balanced wheel.

To begin Step 2, create your Wheel of Life and evaluate your priorities.

Suggestions to Help You Recover Your Inner Creativity

Trusting your creativity is a new behaviour that can seem threatening initially.  There may be self-attacks, and there will undoubtedly be an ebb and flow to the process of recovering our creative selves.  As we gain strength, we will be able to deal with these attacks and take more pleasure in unlocking our inner creativity.

Steps to begin trusting your creativity:

• List 20 things you enjoy doing (rock climbing, painting, baking, playing baseball, reading, etc.).
• From this list, write down two favourite things you've avoided for quite some time and make them this month's
• List 10 changes you'd like to make (paint the kitchen, go to the gym, read more, etc.).
• Select one small item from this list and make it this month's goal.

Ask yourself what motivates you, what gives your life meaning?  Find the answer, and you will find not only your inner creativity, but you will find yourself.  When you find the answers, you will be living the life intended for you.
